Field testing is often preferable to laboratory testing to measure the corrosivity of process streams in the oil and gas production. To this end, the Field Corrosivity Toolbox (FCT) was developed. It comprises a device to quickly perform on-line corrosivity determination plus a range of portable equipment for off-line water analysis to support this. Applications include establishment of the corrosion mechanism and therefore corrosion control options and optimization of chemical treatment programs. The FCT can be deployed much more easily than the traditional side stream equipment. To properly operate the equipment and to make the necessary translations from measurements to actual field corrosivity the use of experienced personnel is recommended. A study on the corrosivity of field produced water obtained from in-situ oil sands operators to UNS G10180 carbon steel. Rotating cylinder electrode (RCE) and rotating cage autoclave (RCA) systems were used as test methods. The susceptibility of the carbon steel to pitting was also evaluated.
