This paper reviews the evolution in corrosion monitoring technology from off-line, historical applications to online, real-time use. It discusses the results of a study involving a potable water flow loop including real-time corrosion monitoring of both general and pitting corrosion. Varying conditions of water quality and chemical treatment were evaluated to reveal their impact on system reliability and integrity. Readings of both corrosion rate and Pitting Factor were available at a frequency where operations personnel could minimize corrosion, maintenance, failures and associated costs on a real-time basis
