This paper presents a series of typical corrosion failure analyses predominantly taken from the Gulf of Mexico region over the past few years, focusing on deepwater applications. The examples selected reflect both the more common and unusual type of failures noted per various materials, facilities/systems, and a range of root causes and mechanisms. The case histories are analyzed and acceptable fit-for-purpose solutions determined, and it is emphasized that failure mechanism and root cause may or may not be directly related. A practical investigative methodology for solving is seen to have evolved using established methods and analytical techniques. As a result engineering guidelines impacting existing design modification as well as future new designs have been identified to help minimize or eliminate repeat corrosion failures. Additionally other areas such as the need for solution verification via diligent on-line monitoring are identified. Keywords Offshore corrosion failures, root causes, corrosion mechanisms, materials performance, methods and analyses, design excursions, fit-for-purpose solutions, mechanical integrity, regulations, monitoring, verification.
