For over two decades, stabilized phosphate treatment programs have been the standard for cooling system operation. The identification of particularly effective polymer technology allowed for use of relatively high phosphate concentrations in the bulk cooling stream so that effective carbon steel corrosion control could be maintained, while eliminating concern for phosphate deposition. However, since the identification of these programs, cooling system operation has changed dramatically due to both discharge restrictions and water conservation efforts. High cycle operation of these applications is standard and requires improved deposit control technology so as to maintain efficient cooling tower operation. To that end, this paper will highlight advanced polymer technology for use under stressed conditions and will also include pertinent performance data.
