One potential technology for destroying hazardous waste is supercritical water oxidation (SCWO). Although high destruction efficiencies are possible, the materials of fabrication are subject to severe conditions. Corrosion can be a significant concern and this paper discusses localized effects, including stress corrosion cracking (SCC) and dealloying, observed in chlorinated environments.
Keywords: Supercritical water oxidation, high temperature corrosion, hazardous waste destruction, corrosion in SCWO systems.
