This paper presents the use of EMAT technology as a tool to evaluate the condition of above ground pipelines in oilfield operations. This method of inspection can be used to identify the location of corrosion damage, cracks and other material defects in pipeline steel while in service. Electro-magnetic acoustic transducers (EMAT) have the ability to cover large surface areas, cost effectively covering the full body of the pipeline. This system can find the location of both internal and external defects.
