For decades, the corrosion inhib#ors used in coatings on aluminum structure have contained hexavalent chromium compounds. However, hexavalent chromium is a known human carcinogen. Increasing awareness of this issue has encouraged the development of
nonchromated corrosion inhibitors. To date none of the nonchromated inhibitors have been shown to provide overall corrosion resistance as good as hexavalent chromium. In this presentation, we will discuss the performance of these new nonchromated coatings in terms of protecting structural fatigue life from corrosion damage.
