The susceptibility of materials to metal dusting is dependent on several parameters, the activity of the carburizing environment, temperature, surface finish, alloy composition and pressure. This paper describes the initial test results obtained in newly developed equipment that allows the metal dusting process to be studied at pressures of up to 4 MPa. Early results show that the atmosphere and test conditions were capable of producing metal dusting in alloy 316. The severity of attack increased with increasing pressure.
