Centrifugal compressors are widely installed and operated in different industries with corrosive environments. The compressor impellers experience different corrosive failures depending on the operating environment. After a series of studies on the stress corrosion and corrosion fatigue failures of impellers, a practical and complete procedure has been developed. The intended result of this procedure is elimination and prevention of failures. This paper presents this effective procedure along with three case study and measurement applications. The procedure combines failure root causes identification steps in both metallurgical and mechanical fields. Besides emphasizing the mechanical verification on the metallurgical inspection results, the procedure also provides some very practical solutions.

Failure of a diffuser (with vanes, made from material P265GH) is investigated. The gas compressor was in service for over 10 years. The gas contained both CO2 and H2S. Relative humidity of the gas was 100 %. It was found that the diffuser was fractured in 3 locations.
