Dealing with stray currents is bad enough, but dealing with third party's stray current complicates the situation even more. The electric and gas utilities performed a series of tests under various conditions to alleviate the stray current discharge off the 42" gas pipe to the electric utility's neutral system which acted as a carrier for the stray dc transit rail system. A compromise is reached where the gas pipe potentials are improved and the electric utility is operating at tolerable lead sheath potential levels.
