Performance testing of aluminium anode alloys is discussed with special focus on the determination of electrochemical capacity. It is shown that available test methods are unreliable with respect to obtaining consistent and reproducible results. Numerous short and long term test results are presented and possible explanations discussed. The problem is probably due to the electrochemical nature of aluminium and the practical difficulties in correctly cleaning the anode samples after exposure. Alloy microstructure modifications have shown to have a positive influence on the electrochemical capacity. Use of a titanium boride grain refining agent was found to improve the capacity by 3-4 %points. Long term testing is shown to give poorer results than short term tests, probably because of a lower anodic current density. Care should be taken when selecting anodes based on electrochemical test results.
