In addition to the piping that carries slurry to the spray headers of the absorbers, many FGD systems include very long runs of piping to slurry ponds and other discharge points. While slurry piping does not receive extensive attention in the technical literature, proper piping selection can significantly improve system reliability and performance, while incorrect selections can lead to increased cost and/or serious maintenance problems. Alloy piping, fiber-reinforced thermoset plastic piping, thermoplastic piping, and steel piping lined with rubber (sometimes
with a rubber cover as well) have all been used. No one category of piping is best for all applications. The advantages and disadvantages of each category are discussed in detail.
