Corrosion is one of the great causes of accident and economic losses in petroleum and petrochemical industries. Thus, new materials, inhibitors and monitoring techniques are constantly under development in order to improve corrosion prevention and plant reliability. The last years have shown the great importance of Monitoring Techniques applied process industries. However, corrosion monitoring alone doesn't assure the control of corrosion process. Corrosion control in the industrial field can be quite complex since their domain is itself complex. It involves multidisciplinary knowledge and continuos actions from different agents. Knowledge Based Systems or Expert Systems developed trying to simulate the human expert intelligent behavior in the task of solving a specific problem are shown its importance in this scenario. This paper presents an overview on knowledge-based systems development and its interaction with industrial environment as well makes an approach to computer tools that facilitate their development, installation and maintenance. Keywords: Knowledge Based System, Corrosion Monitoring, Expert System, Artificial Intelligence, Corrosion Control.
