Erosion-corrosive behavior of various materials in a fluidized-bed incinerator environment was investigated. It was found that thickness-loss due to corrosion only or erosion only was minimal, but
noticeably increased in an erosion-corrosion environment. This was attributed to an increase in the rate of corrosion that occurs when the scale is damaged by erosion. Thus, the rate of metal loss depended on the rate of scale growth due to corrosion, and on the rate of scale damage due to erosion. If the rate of scale growth is faster, the scale as well as a certain degree of protection can be maintained; while if the rate of erosive damage is taster, the loss of scale will cause the rate of corrosion to increase, leading to severe metal loss.
