In ship's ballast tanks, most of coating failures (and corrosion attacks) were observed on sharp steel edges, welds seams and weld spatters. One solution is to employ high solid coating material with less tendency to flow away from edges. In this study, two coatings are selected and evaluated in terms of their edge retention ability.

Currently, Ships’ Force (SF) conduct maintenance and repair painting during pier-side periods as well as while ships are underway. SF commonly use epoxy primers, such as MIL-DTL-24441, Type IV, for maintenance painting and in some cases, chloride contamination and surface profile is not adequately controlled. The Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) conducted a study to verify the efficacy of replacing the current epoxy primers commonly used by SF with more “user friendly” high-build, high-solid primers.
Offshore is a very corrosive environment with a high corrosion rate. The offshore coating service life is relatively short and extremely expensive to apply maintenance coatings onsite. A new accelerated coating corrosion test method is proposed.
