This paper addresses two recent regulatory actions regarding lead. The first is the October 15, 2008 revision to the National Ambient Air Quality Standards for Lead. The second regulation is the August 14, 2008 update to the OSHA Instruction: National Emphasis Program – Lead, which describes OSHA’s nation-wide emphasis on reducing occupational lead exposures. The authors will overview the regulatory actions and discuss potential impacts on the painting industry.
This paper introduces a novel method for chemical surface preparation of concrete surfaces that has been recognized by ASTM under a recent revision of ASTM D4260. Contractors will learn current methods used to prepare concrete in order to receive coatings.
The Society for Preventive Coatings (SSPC) has been an essential partner with the Department of Defense in the fight against corrosion for nearly 10 years. Since 2003, SSPC’s leadership and expertise in corrosion management, prevention and control has been a very important factor in our success at combating the insidious and pervasive effects of corrosion on our facilities and equipment.
This paper identifies the problems with current inspection procedures and discusses a proposed standard for levels of inspection that the owner will specify in the contract documents. The paper identifies the problems and cost to contractors and owners for inspection without clear and specified inspection standards and will demonstrate a savings without compromising the quality of the work.
Corrosion protection at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center is a high priority item. The launch facilities at the Kennedy Space Center are located approximately 1000 feet from the Atlantic Ocean where they are exposed to salt deposits, high humidity, high UV degradation, and acidic exhaust from solid rocket boosters. These assets are constructed from carbon steel, which requires a suitable coating to provide long-term protection to reduce corrosion and its associated costs.
This annual paper summarizes environmental, health and safety issues that may impact SSPC members. This paper discusses current and expected EPA and OSHA regulatory rulemaking, emphasis programs, enforcement initiatives or other similar topics. This paper will include a review of OSHA’s expected final standards on confined space in construction and silica and other proposed or revised regulations related to the coatings industry. Most of the information is taken directly from the respective agency’s published regulatory agenda, supplemented by anecdotal information gathered from various professional journals, seminars, and conferences.
