Several components in geothermal power plants need to be protected from the environment due to the corrosive nature of geothermal fluids used to generate the energy. Depending on the fluid properties for any location, the type of protection varies. In geothermal power plants, wear, erosion, corrosion, and scaling are all known problems1. These issues can lead to a variety of outcomes, ranging from decreased plant efficiency to upstream component failure. Failure of a component is thus a significant challenge in the geothermal industry, where materials need to operate in high temperature and high pressure environments. A major cost factor is also linked to the drilling of geothermal wells, where cost rises due to increased depth/distance of drilling, increased trip times, higher high temperature and high-pressure conditions which can lead to increased wear and corrosion of the materials. To address the issue, coatings can be considered to be a potential solution to extend the service life of downhole equipment.

The austenitic alloy UNS N08935 has been developed to offer high resistance to corrosion in various environments – especially those containing high levels of chlorides or acid components. It can be an interesting alternative to conventional Ni-based alloys, due to its relatively low Ni-content at 35% by weight. In applications where thick gauges are required, it may be beneficial to utilize clad material – i.e., a thin layer of corrosion resistant alloy (CRA) bonded to a thicker gauge of a less costly backing material (typically carbon steel). In this work, explosion clad plate with a UNS N08935 CRA layer has been produced and evaluated to characterize the effect of the bonding process and heat treatment on the material properties. Prior to explosion bonding, two UNS N08935 plates were welded together (GTAW, groove weld, ENICRMO-13 filler metal) to simulate pre-cladding processing. The resulting welded plate was explosion bonded to SA516-70N carbon steel, and the effectiveness of the bonding process was confirmed via automated ultrasonic inspection of 100% of the clad surface. Mechanical testing at various locations was performed in order to characterize the strength of the UNS N08935 / carbon steel bond. Material properties of the CRA layer, in both the welded and unwelded condition and before and after heat treatments simulating subsequent processing steps for the bonded plate, have been evaluated in terms of microstructure and corrosion resistance.
