Asbestos-containing textured surfacing materials, as well as other types of asbestos containing materials, were historically applied in significant quantities to concrete bridges and other structures built as late as the early 1990’s. The use of linings to rehabilitate concrete surfaces in water and wastewater environments has been increasing. This paper discusses the basics of concrete, concrete deterioration, and subsequent rehabilitation options, with an emphasis on coatings.
The Use of sacrificial anode cathodic protection has successfully prevented the corrosion of both new and old corroding prestressed non-cylinder concrete pipelines. Field results from 5 new and 3 old lines, which have been cathodically protected for up to 18 years, are reported. In all cases the required potential difference criteria. have been achieved with current densities in the range 0.2 to 1.8 mA per square metre of steel surface area.
