Qualified U.S. Navy nonskid coatings are two-component (2K) epoxy-based systems that contain various sizes of aggregate. Once mixed, these highly viscous coatings are applied using a napless roller to generate a “peak and valley” profile that provides skid/slip-resistance when cured. The roll-application process is slow and inconsistent, and appearance is often determined by experience of the applicator.
The US Marine Corps (USMC) uses the various paints within the specifications that makeup the CARC system on their vehicles and weapon systems. Their use includes new system acquisition, field repair, major repaint activities and during complete system rebuild at the depots.
The United States Army and Marine Corps (USMC) paint their vehicles with the Chemical Agent Resistant Coating (CARC) system. This system consists of a pretreatment, an epoxy primer, and polyurethane topcoat, similar to many other industrial paint systems, but with added functional requirements (e.g., chemical agent resistance, camouflage, and signature reduction) unique to these paints. The systems that utilize these coatings are also designed for specific capabilities, of which corrosion is usually a lower priority. Lastly, the vehicles and equipment of the Army and USMC typically operate in harsh environments, which are highly corrosive.
Corrosion significantly impacts safety, availability and sustainment costs of U.S. Air Force (AF) systems and equipment. System downtime due to corrosion maintenance decreases the availability of systems to perform their national defense mission and drives the need for more aircraft and associated logistics tail. In addition, the AF spends about $5.5 Billion per year, about 21 percent of the annual AF maintenance budget, on corrosion maintenance.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers owns and operates the vast majority of the countries lock and dam structures for inland navigation. The large steel gates on these structures are subjected to a severe impact and abrasive environment while in immersion by debris such as timber, ice, steel drums, etc. High VOC vinyl resin coatings have historically been the best available coatings for these structures in this environment but have exhibited very poor performance at the water line where the impact and abrasion is at its worse.
The U.S. Air Force will never eliminate corrosion in aerospace systems, but synchronized efforts can help sustain positive trends in conserving maintenance dollars, increasing system availability, and reducing corrosion-related mishaps. The AF Corrosion Control and Prevention Executive established an aggressive goal to reduce corrosion’s effects by 20% by 2025: a 20% reduction in corrosion maintenance costs; a 20% reduction in non-available hours (NAH) due to corrosion repairs; and a 20% reduction in corrosion-related safety mishaps.

In any military base, there are numerous assets that need to be maintained. These assets can easily be traced from the fuel offload all the way through to the fuel dispenser. In between, this fuel travels through pipelines, into storage tanks, into pump stations, through filter separators, into fuel dispensers, and finally into either a track or non-track vehicle including jets. Therefore, it is extremely important to develop a system to inventory all assets and perform condition assessments on each to prevent degradation, corrosion, possible section loss of the metallic substrate, and loss of the liquid fuel. This paper will highlight some of the assets related to the fuels pipeline and related assets.
