Highly engineered PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) based coatings have evolved over the years to meet the specific requirements of market segments. Over 50 years ago, high temperature-baked PVDF based finishes were introduced to the architectural community to protect the metal components of skyscrapers, stadiums, and other landmark structures. The multi-decade service life and extreme weatherability of these coatings is attested to by outdoor Florida exposure and demonstrated by performance on structures worldwide.
When selecting among decorative or functional/protective architectural coatings many factors need to be considered; one key aspect is how long the product will last (weather). A “ten year” warranty is neither a guarantee of total replacement cost nor that all “ten year” products are created equal.
Two component polyurethane coatings are used in a variety of applications including industrial maintenance. These coating systems were introduced in the 1970’s primarily as topcoats; characterized by their excellent weatherability, toughness, and chemical and stain resistance. When formulated as ambient cured systems, traditional two component polyurethanes typically sacrifice cure time for pot life unless plural component application equipment is employed.
High-solids, two-component acrylic polyurethane coating formulations were prepared using a new low-viscosity, reactive diluent that incorporates directly into the final polymer network. The resulting acrylic coatings were found to increase the solids content of formulations without compromising mechanical performance. Acrylic polyurethane coating samples containing the diluent were evaluated for weatherability performance via QUV and environmental chamber studies.
