A series of accidents involving falls from or in water tanks has highlighted inadequacies in tank design and a potentially greater problem. The rescue may be more dangerous than the original accident, with the potential for more loss of life or injury.
When WIT Inc. was asked to rehabilitate the Alta Vista Standpipe, the first order of business would be to conduct a comprehensive tank evaluation in order to determine the overall condition, and also, to compile an inventory of deficiencies, repairs and upgrade objectives so that the project manual for the bid phase would include all necessary work to bring the tank to current AWWA standards.
As a Central source for water distribution, emergency services, and communications transmission, the Penn Avenue Tower represents a focal point for the City of Richfield, Minnesota. The 1.5-million-gallon water tower is a multi-column elevated style tank located in a residential and commercial business area on shared property with the City’s No. 2 Fire Station. An engineering evaluation identified the need for complete replacement and maintenance repair of exterior and interior coating systems, along with accessory modifications.
