Carbon capture and storage (CCS) or utilisation (CCU) of the captured carbon dioxide (CO2) are tools for reducing global carbon emissions, and to combat climate change both are required. According to the IEA1, in 2021, the global capacity of CCS grew by 48%i, showing that this technology is becoming more popular to meet sustainability targets.
Coatings designed for heavy duty applications in the maintenance and protective coatings market are exposed to aggressive environments such as aggressive chemical solvents, marine atmospheres, UV light, abrasion, among others. In the US as well as other areas of the world, coatings designed for these applications have been primarily solvent-borne.
The seismic retrofitting of the County of Placer/Foresthill Road Bridge included replacing the gusset plates at the bolted connection points on the structure. Newly fabricated connection plates were prepared in the steel fabrication shop by abrasive blast cleaning and applying an inorganic zinc-rich primer. Existing connection plates were removed and the surfaces beneath abrasive blast cleaned and primed on-site with an organic (epoxy) zinc-rich primer. The connections were slip-critical.
Quality Assurance (QA) paint testing is an important obligation of any paint manufacturer and/or end user. Each year, hundreds of batches slotted to be applied on US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) hydraulic steel structures around the country are submitted to be tested at the Engineering Research Development Center, Construction Engineering Research Laboratory, Paint Technology Center (ERDC-CERL-PTC). A significant fraction of those samples fail.
The US Environmental Protection Agency defines "Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC)" in 40 CFR 51.100(s) as “any compound of carbon, excluding carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, carbonic acid, metallic carbides or carbonates, and ammonium carbonate, which participates in atmospheric photochemical reactions.”
