Inorganic zinc (IOZ) silicate coating was previously applied to partially fabricated low alloy, 21/4 Cr-1MoV, high temperature, hydrogen, reactor vessels for long-term storage corrosion protection prior to final welding and post weld heat treatment (PWHT) at 690-720°C (1274-1328°F). The need for complete coating removal to mitigate the known embrittlement and weld cracking that can occur after welding and PWHT led to the development of a novel, environmentally friendly method to remove IOZ to trace levels below 1 ppm.

In metalworking processes, contaminants can interfere with future processing steps and may accelerate corrosion on metal parts. As such, a cleaning step is often implemented prior to coating or packaging finished parts. Industrial cleaners are typically water-based with blends of surfactants, co-solvents, chelating agents, and/or flash rust inhibitors. While accelerated corrosion tests such as humidity and salt fog exist, they are typically too aggressive for the evaluation of flash rust inhibitors in cleaners which are not meant to provide long-term corrosion protection. There is a need in the industry for a quick and reliable way to select a cleaner that meets the needs of the application and is compatible with the overall process. A screening method to compare the flash rust protection ability of various water-based cleaners was investigated. Modified vapor inhibiting ability (VIA) testing and linear polarization resistance (LPR) tests were performed on carbon steel plugs treated with several cleaners. Industry standards currently recommend that any detergent or cleaner be removed from metal surfaces prior to applying coatings. When evaluating cleaning processes where coatings will be subsequently applied, adhesion testing should be paired with the screening test. The effects of various cleaners on adhesion of a waterborne acrylic coating were investigated.

The transition of pulsed laser ablation (PLA) technology into the hands of maintainers within shipyards and the transportation industry requires an assessment of multiple factors. From the technical perspective relative to surface preparation and corrosion mitigation, it is essential to understand the impact of PLA energy into substrates and the resultant adhesion characteristics of subsequent coatings. Technical areas to be discussed include metallurgical properties, such as stress corrosion cracking, weldability, bulk properties, fatigue life, as well as adhesion. The effective application of laser ablation is of critical concern to preservation professionals, which requires an understanding of how the process works, the proper appearance of a laser ablated surface, whether that is a tightly adhered existing coating prepared for re-coating, or to expose some or all of the base metal substrate. Accordingly, both laser operators and inspectors need specific information and training to appropriately use the technology to meet preservation objectives and requirements. These needs will be addressed through a forthcoming AMPP Laser Ablation Standard, Technical Guide, and Visual Guide. Determining where to apply PLA based on extensive test data currently available, as well as understanding where future investigation is required, will be summarized.

Issues with Correlation between Accelerated Test Methods and Field Performance

Lifetime prediction often relies on various accelerated methods with the end goal of accurately predicting time-to-failure and failure modes which may occur during real-world exposure. This presentation will focus on a case study for organic coatings over a coil-type metal substrate. Samples from 2011 were evaluated by multiple corrosion, humidity, flexibility, and adhesion measurements prior to field exposure at two test fences in Florida. An unexpected field failure, general blistering, was observed relatively rapidly after the field exposure commenced. This study focuses on data analysis of the 2011 physical and corrosion tests, field exposure results, and recent electrochemical and microscopic evaluations of unexposed 2011 retain samples. The retain samples were from the same 2011 study, but they were never tested and were maintained wrapped on a shelf in a laboratory. No correlation was observed between the standard 2011 tests and the resulting field performance. However, newer test methods, including Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) and Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy (STEM) cross-section analysis with elemental mapping, provided insight into the reason for the field blister failure. The proposed mechanism of failure was inconsistencies in pretreatment deposition which caused inconsistent EIS performance and localized blistering upon field testing.
