Compares the accelerated corrosion performance of an alkylated phenolic polyamine cured epoxy coating applied to abrasive blasted steel (NACE 1/SSPC-SP5) to the same application on substrates allowed to rust.
The effects of three blasting methods utilised for surface preparation upon the behavior of five organic coating systems are investigated. The blasting methods include dry blast cleaning, UHP and UHPAB. It is shown that pull-off strength, pull-off failure mode, and delamination are significantly affected by the surface preparation method.
Coatings maintenance projects are typically scheduled and selected based on ASTM rust grade, service environment - corrosion rate, coating condition and project visibility or aesthetics. There is something missing. That something is a risk-based assessment. This paper will demonstrate how to make a risk grid and accommodate this into condition assessment criteria for prioritizing and scheduling painting projects.
SSPC-VIS 2 provides a method to evaluate the degree of rusting on painted steel (or iron) surfaces. The reference color photographs and corresponding black and white images, which depict the percentage of rusting given in the written specification, form part of the standard.
This standard quantifies the degree of rusting on painted steel surfaces with a zero to ten scale base on the percentage of visible rust present on the surface. Visible rust includes rust blisters and undercutting of the coating.
The rusting depicted in the photographs is not accompanied by blistering, but the photographs show staning associated with the rust.
