However, depending upon the corrosiveness of the process conditions, choices of materials of construction can be limited. One of a highly corrosive condition is acidic chloride chemistry (like, hydrochloric acid) in which only a handful of alloys (like, Ni-Cr-Mo alloys) can provide a reasonable service life, which though depends upon the amount of chloride, operating temperature, and impurities level.

In Oil & Gas industries, Cr-Ni-Mo stainless steels and Ni-Cr-Mo alloys with Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number (PREN) lower than 40 could be selected for Rigid Production subsea risers, pipeline, and associated structure’s piping, according to a CO2/H2S corrosion assessment that considers all steady and transient conditions foreseen to operate the reservoir.

However, there are frequently some localized corrosion concerns for these materials during the installation and pre-commissioning of the line, when the internal surface of the line could be in contact temporarily with untreated seawater. These concerns systematically lead to discard the selection of these materials and to select, for conservative purpose, UNS N06625 that is admitted immune to localized corrosion in ambient seawater in international standard and operator’s specification, whatever the outcomes of the CO2/H2 corrosion assessment.

Diffusion Rate and Chemical Composition Variance of Nickel Alloys 625 Vs. 825 Multi-Layers

In this paper, a detailed analysis was performed to define the variance between both Nickel alloys 825 and 625 Multi-alloys. A comprehensive experiment and testing was done to evaluate both mechanical and chemical properties for the flanges with weld overlay, fittings and pipe components. The results of the study indicated several challenges and the gaps between both materials. Therefore, an initiative was led to promote the current process in order to prevent reoccurrence and mitigate associated consequences of failure by investigating and defining the root cause analysis. In order to ensure bridging the gaps, the paper concludes with a list of recommendations for the actions taken towards the material and vendor quality in order to proceed forward with the corrective actions and precautions for utilization whenever different PMI readings are found in cladding to continue supplying high quality products as expected.

Erosion Behavioral Study for High Nickel Alloys

Oil and gas industry have employed Corrosion Resistant Alloys (CRA) in highly corrosive environments for a sustained production capacity and longer service life. These materials are regarded to have high resistance to corrosion, however, a prominent issue that can occur in O&G production is the potential of erosion along material surface. In this study, ASTM G76 standard was used as basis to generate high nickel alloy erosion database. The materials used in this study include N06255, N08535 and N07718 with respective nickel content of 48.5, 31.4 and 48 %wt. An Air-Jet Erosion Tester was utilized with Alumina Oxide as erodent for this study, in which the feedrate varied between 1 – 6 g/min with a 1g/min step, impingement velocity ranging between 30 - 110 m/s and a varying impingement angle (15° - 90°) with 15° step bringing the total number of runs in excess of 100. The erosional behavior of materials N06255, N08535 and N07718 were studied and the resulting steady state erosion rate (SSER) for each was determined. The tested materials were ranked based on SSER from lowest to highest metal loss per time as follows N06255, N8535 and N07718 which could be attributed to difference in molybdenum and nickel content.

Evaluation of Alloy 825 Performance in a Critical Sour Environment with Elemental Sulphur Deposition

The deposition of elemental sulfur is a major concern in the gas and oil industries. The effect of sulfur deposition on nickel-based alloy 825 under severe conditions is not well understood. This work investigates the impact of elemental sulfur deposition on Alloy 825 under two conditions using four-point bend test in accordance with NACE TM0316.The results show that alloy 825 samples were not affected by way of SSC, SCC, pitting or other corrosion damage mechanisms in temperature of 90° C, pressure of 75 bar, Chloride level of 1000 ppm, a partial pressure of H2S of 12 bara, and a partial pressure of CO2 of 55 bara with present of elemental sulfur. A further autoclave exposure test was performed in which alloy 825 samples were exposed in 20 bara H2S partial pressure and 57 bara CO2 partial pressure in 21,853 ppm chloride and =150gL-1 elemental sulfur at 190°C for 720 hours. Under this condition, alloy 825 shows environmentally assisted corrosion as well as SCC on all samples. As a conclusion, alloy 825 is not a robust material against elemental sulfur related degradation at high temperature and pressure with high H2S and CO2 environment. Hence, safety risk from elemental sulfur deposition at high temperature should be carefully considered and evaluated when using alloy 825. The limit tested in this paper could provide a reference for selecting alloy 825 in presence of sulfur.

Evaluation of UNS N08935 as CRA Material for Explosion Clad Plate

The austenitic alloy UNS N08935 has been developed to offer high resistance to corrosion in various environments – especially those containing high levels of chlorides or acid components. It can be an interesting alternative to conventional Ni-based alloys, due to its relatively low Ni-content at 35% by weight. In applications where thick gauges are required, it may be beneficial to utilize clad material – i.e., a thin layer of corrosion resistant alloy (CRA) bonded to a thicker gauge of a less costly backing material (typically carbon steel). In this work, explosion clad plate with a UNS N08935 CRA layer has been produced and evaluated to characterize the effect of the bonding process and heat treatment on the material properties. Prior to explosion bonding, two UNS N08935 plates were welded together (GTAW, groove weld, ENICRMO-13 filler metal) to simulate pre-cladding processing. The resulting welded plate was explosion bonded to SA516-70N carbon steel, and the effectiveness of the bonding process was confirmed via automated ultrasonic inspection of 100% of the clad surface. Mechanical testing at various locations was performed in order to characterize the strength of the UNS N08935 / carbon steel bond. Material properties of the CRA layer, in both the welded and unwelded condition and before and after heat treatments simulating subsequent processing steps for the bonded plate, have been evaluated in terms of microstructure and corrosion resistance.

Advanced creep degradation was discovered in steam methane reformer (SMR) outlet pigtails during planned maintenance. The outlet pigtails were fabricated from alloy 800HT (ASTM B407 UNS N08811) which had operated within design pressure and temperature for approximately six (6) years. It is industry knowledge that there have been instances of wrought alloy 800H/HT suppliers not complying with the applicable grain size requirements of ASTM B407. Additionally, a few SMR operators use supplemental grain size requirements that are more conservative than ASTM B407. This paper will document the extent of the damage, root cause, repair, and a recommendation to API TR 942-A.
