The purpose of this paper is to study the corrosion resistance performance and requirements of AM biomedical implants as well as to characterize the corrosion behavior of Additive Manufactured 316L stainless steel in simulated physiological environment. The corrosion performance and mechanical properties of additively manufactured 316L stainless steel material in simulated physiological environment was studied. In the efforts of improving the reliability of Additive Manufactured biomedical devices, this research focuses on studying the corrosion, microstructural and mechanical properties of Additive Manufactured 316L stainless steel. It evaluates corrosion resistance through characterizing the corrosion behavior using cyclic anodic polarization tests in simulated physiological environment. In this experiment, the properties of 316L stainless steel parts manufactured using Selective Laser Melting SLM technique have been studied. Cyclic potentiodynamic polarization test indicated that additive manufactured materials had slightly lower corrosion resistance than the casted stainless steel parts of the same grade. This was evident by the difficulty of regenerating a stable and protective passive oxide layer at room temperature as well as the instability of passivation at higher temperatures. Moreover, the additive manufactured samples showed a higher yield strength than the casted samples but lower values for elongation and ultimate tensile stress.

Several industrial applications including the chemical industry and oilfield technology involve frequently halide-containing streams at elevated temperatures, that challenge the pitting corrosion resistance of metallic materials. Pitting susceptibility becomes not only a reject criterion for materials selection during the design stages of engineering components used in these applications. It also constitutes a significant limiting factor to the service life of these components once in service. Therefore, the characterization of the pitting corrosion resistance of metallic materials including the influence that operational factors can have on material’s susceptibility is crucial.

Because of their versatility CrMn-stainless steels have become the most used structural materials in directional and while-drilling reservoir characterization tools. Nevertheless, pitting and environmentally assisted cracking (EAC) are a major concern when these materials are subjected to high halide-containing water-based drilling fluids at elevated temperatures. Consequently, pitting corrosion resistance becomes a crucial property to guarantee operational reliability and integrity of drilling equipment. Indeed, nickel-stabilized austenitic stainless steels and super austenitic stainless steels with higher contents of chromium and molybdenum have been recently developed as alternatives in drilling operations involving harsh environments. In this study, the pitting and repassivation behavior of several grades used in drilling technology was investigated using electrochemical methods. The tests were conducted in brines with different pH-values at temperatures ranging from ambient temperature to 150 °C. Experimental results are compared to PREN-Mod and CPT-values as well as to results from ASTM G48 Method A. The experimental data provided in this paper demonstrates the lack of correlation between the real pitting resistance of most grades commonly used in drilling equipment in brines at elevated temperatures and the commonly used PREN-Mod values. In addition, the limited applicability of results from standardized test methodologies for predicting pitting susceptibility in service is confirmed. The discussed electrochemical results provide on the other hand a more suitable basis for defining criteria regarding materials selection in drilling technology.

Flue gas desulfurization (FGD) systems are frequently used at power plants to remove SO2 from coal combustion. In systems where limestone is utilized, calcium sulfate from the resulting slurry can be concentrated into a valuable byproduct. However, the concentrated slurry containing chloride poses increased localized corrosion risk to the materials of construction in contact with exhaust/combustion stream. Cyclic Potentiodynamic Polarization (CPP) and Critical Crevice Temperature (CCT) present electrochemical methodologies which can be used to assess the relative risk of different conditions in the laboratory. However, the results of these techniques can be dependent on the details of the experimental protocol. In this study, the effect of slurry preparation, potential scan rate, alloy conditioning time, and slurry acidity were examined. A conservative test protocol was developed based on the outcomes of the effects considered, and the critical chloride concentration of Alloy UNS S32205 was determined, enabling optimization of FGD operating conditions.
