Nuclear steam generators (SG) are subject to the accumulation of corrosion product deposits on heated tube surfaces and other internal components. In the past 15 years, processes to periodically remove only a fraction of the deposit inventory have been developed that save time, money and effort.
A case history of repeated failure of a gas/gas shell and tube heat exchanger in a gas dehydration unit in a gathering center. The investigation showed that corrosion products had resulted in the blockage.
In late 2021, several leaks were observed inside the waste heat boiler coil of the steam reformer furnace at the refinery. The leaks were located in the first row of tubes of the hot bank in the vertically-oriented coil, where boiler water inside the tubes is heated via waste heat of the reformer stack. The waste heat boiler coil has a design duty of 69.59 MMBtu/hr (~20.4 MW), with design pressures and temperatures of 1010 psig (6.9 MPa) and 700°F (371°C), respectively.
Black Powder is a phenomenon that all oil and gas companies are facing and presenting a variety of problems in associated processing equipment and pipelines, such as flow inefficiency, product contamination, wear, plugging and under deposit corrosion, among others. Another major concern is the possible formation of elemental Sulfur (S8), which could be produced as a by-product of oxidation of iron sulfides. It also can be produced from H2S dissociation at elevated temperatures or by microbiological reactions, involving the reduction of sulfate.
