A compact and autonomous corrosion sensor using the principle of electrical resistance variations of its metallic sensitive tracks has been used for different applications under atmospheric corrosion conditions. The measurement of the corrosion rate is performed in-situ both under laboratory and field exposure. From the results it is possible to better understand the atmospheric corrosion of steel and hot-dip galvanised steel under various exposure conditions. The technique should also allow the design of realistic and reliable corrosion tests for different indiustrial applications.

Recent Advances in Hybrid Laser-Arc Welding of Thick Steel Plates

With the objective of reducing the number of welding passes in thick plate welding, hybrid laser-arc welding technique was utilized to one-pass weld 25mm thick steel plates. Butt joints were designed with a square groove and 2.5mm air gap. Either ceramic strip or submerged arc welding flux was used for joint backing. The joint gap was filled up with cut-wire particles of the same chemical compositions as those of the arc welding filler wire. Cut-wire particles were inserted to protect the backing material from direct interaction with the laser irradiation. Welding parameters were optimized to obtain full penetration joints without damaging the backing material. Square groove butt joints of 25mm thickness were successfully welded in one welding pass. Similarly, 50 mm thick square groove butt joints could be double-side welded

Traditional coating systems for steel have often used a sacrificial primer, barrier coat and topcoat, to provide good UV resistance and appearance. One fundamental problem with all organic coating systems is that there will always be some permeation through the coating. These systems are therefore sacrificial in nature and have a finite life. The use of multi-coat systems also dramatically increases application time, presenting problems both for new construction and maintenance projects.

Reduction of Tool Wear and Loads During Friction Stir Welding of Steel for Pipeline Fabrication

Friction stir welding procedure development was initiated on steel grades S460 G2+M and S690QL1 in plate wall thicknesses of 10 and 15mm. In order to tackle the challenges of the high mechanical loads on the tool as well as its premature wear, a combination of preheating and optimized weld backing set-up was implemented. The inductive preheating allowed a 28% reduction in welding torque and a significant reduction of the tool wear, particularly during the critical initial plunge of the tool within the base material. A comparison of Mo-based and W-based tool was performed, allowing identifying the W-based tool as having a better combination of high temperature strength and wear resistance. Different backing arrangements and materials were investigated. Ceramic backing inlays were used in order to reduce the heat loss at the root area and maintain an acceptable stirring of this zone to achieve full penetration welds. The welds quality was assessed via metallurgical examination, bend tests, and confirmed the possibility to perform sound full-penetration, one-sided welds. The contribution of the preheating to the process as well as the quality and mechanical properties of the welds will be discussed here.

A novel experimental methodology for investigating the relationship between corrosion inhibitor adsorption and micellization processes was developed and implemented using different types of inhibitor molecules have been investigated. The approach involved integrating the following experimental methodologies – Mott-Schottky Cyclic Voltammetry Quartz Crystal Microbalance Surface Tension and Fluorescence SpectroscopyHomologous series of quaternary amines and hydroxyethyl imidazolines were studied and compared to establish the effect of critical parameters such as pH salinity temperature and carbon chain length on the adsorption and micellization process. The two processes have been found to be closely related and depend not only on the surfactant properties (polar head group and carbon chain length) but also on environmental parameters such as temperature pH and ionic strength. Adsorption isotherms and critical micelle concentrations were determined under different solution conditions and were used to calculate thermodynamic constants – Gibbs free energy (ΔG) enthalpy (ΔH) and entropy (ΔS) change associated with the two processes. The correlation of these constants that are related to the active components of these inhibitor molecules and solution conditions can help in developing and characterizing corrosion inhibitors required to be used under challenging conditions in the oil and gas industry.
