Lab Performance Testing on Corrosion Inhibitors Under Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Conditions

This paper discusses the design philosophy for corrosion inhibitors used for carbon capture, transportation, and storage and the performance testing using rotating cylinder autoclave (RCA) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) methods under CO2 supercritical conditions.

There has been growing concern that the use of the carbon-based fuels produces greenhouse gases principally carbon dioxide (CO2) which may adversely affect the global climate and environment. One way to mitigate the problem is to use carbon capture transportation and storage (CCTS) techniques and systems. As such there is an increasing demand on corrosion inhibitors for CCTS application and also a need to understand the corrosion inhibitor performance under CCTS operating conditions.In general the CO2 is required to be transported above its critical point (30.98 oC 73.77 bar) as single phase in the system which is a pre-condition for continuous operation at the so-called quasi-steady (QSSA) state. Therefore like most of the corrosion inhibitors performing on their unique functionalities such as for applications of downhole HPHT sweet and sour continue and batch water or oil soluble UDC or TOL etc. the corrosion inhibitors for CCTS applications need to be specially formulated and evaluated under supercritical conditions of CO2.This study presents several testing procedures pursued in the lab under supercritical conditions of CO2 with or without impurities such as water SO2 and H2S. The corrosion rates to be calculated under different testing conditions were direct weight loss of metal coupons and the measurements of the corrosion current corrosion potential polarization resistance with electrochemical instruments.
