This paper reports on the first-time implementation in Kuwait of a complete four-step Wet Gas- Internal Corrosion Direct Assessment (WG-ICDA) for a high-pressure wet gas transmission pipeline owned and operated by Kuwait Oil Company (KOC). The program was performed in compliance with NACE International Standard Practice SP0110-2010.  The pipeline comprises of 2 regions having a diameter of 14” and a total length of 3 km.  Since its commissioning year of 1979 the line was operated under 2 distinct historic stages due to reduced gas flow rate in 2005.  Previously the line was mechanically inspected using MFL In-Line Inspection (ILI) tool in 2006.  During the Indirect Inspection of the WG-ICDA process multiphase flow modeling was performed using in-house proprietary software to determine flow pattern pressure profile temperature drop liquid holdup and solids settling velocities along the entire pipeline.  Thermodynamically characterized phase behaviours and measured chloride ion concentration revealed that the majority of water inside the pipeline came from the formation water rather than condensed water.  Through a statistic comparison between measured MFL-ILI results and predicted cumulative wall losses in 2006 the resultant metal losses were qualitatively correlated with the predicted flow regime liquid holdup solids deposition and pipeline concavity.  Based on a series of sensitivity tests cumulative wall loss in 2006 with respect to gas condensate and water flow rates were quantitatively comprehended.  This resulted in identifying sites with severe localized pitting attack.  Subsequently an innovative concept of dynamic pitting factor was proposed which matches the MFL-ILI measured and predicted cumulative wall loss with a  satisfactory level.  In terms of the obtained dynamic pitting factors historically cumulative wall losses of the pipeline to date were predicted which will be verified during  in-the-ditch Detailed Examination step.  Conclusions and recommendations generated in the Postassessment will be able to elucidate the root causes of metal degradation which assists KOC to ascertain the overall integrity of this asset through optimizing corrosion mitigation strategies and operating conditions.
