Double Cantilever Beam (DCB) test method is increasingly applied to quality assurance test to specify the performance of carbon and low alloy steels for sour service. The DCB test can be contributed to the quantitative evaluation of fracture toughness in sour environment. Although the DCB test has been standardized in NACE standard TM0177 Method Dit is acknowledged that test variable such as specimen geometry test environment and initial loading through the wedge insertion (or arm displacement) can affect K1ssc value. There have been a lot of papers discussing the influence factor on K1SSC. These achievements have modified the test protocols to obtain highly-reliable test results. In this investigation as the mechanical aspect of DCB test various crack starters such as chevron notch fatigue precrack and Electro-Discharged-Machined (EDM) slot of DCB specimen in NACE standard TM0177 are focused. The various crack starters and its configuration are considered to be influenced on test results through the slightly change of specimen compliance. To discuss the effect of crack starters and configurations on test results K1ssc values obtained by DCB specimens with various crack starters are compared. DCB specimen compliance for various crack starters are calculated by FEM and discussed from the view point of fracture mechanics. Modifications to the NACE standard TM0177 Method D protocols on crack starter will be discussed.
