In the coal carrier cargo hold severe corrosion of steel occurs and has become the cause of serious accidents in the past. From the conventional knowledge our investigation in actual cargo hold including pH measurement and component analysis of corroded part and results of laboratory corrosion test using various kinds of coal it could be concluded that dilute sulfuric acid produced by reaction of sulfur in coal and condensation water caused that severe corrosion.New corrosion resistant steel inhibiting corrosion depletion for the coal carrier cargo hold was developed and its performance was investigated in this paper. As the result of laboratory corrosion test maximum corrosion depth of developed steel was suppressed to approximately 70% compared to that of conventional steel. This corrosion resistance was confirmed in exposure test in actual cargo hold as well.As the results of TEM observation of rust layer formed in exposure test rust particle size of developed steel was about one-tenth of that of conventional steel. Additionally as the results of EPMA analysis in developed steel concentration of sulfur in the interface between rust and steel substrate was smaller than that of conventional steel. These results indicate that dense protective rust layer was formed in developed steel and inhibited the permeation of sulfate ion derived from coal to steel substrate.
