51318-11393-Picture for Development of Corrosion Rate Monitoring Method of Steel in Concrete, - CIPE (Current Interrupted Polarizing Extrapolation Method) -

The authors have developed the monitoring method “CIPE” which determines corrosion rate using Tafel slope extrapolation method. To confirm accuracy, the results of CIPE are compared with mass losses of steel bars corroded in concrete.

Because Japan is surrounded by the sea and also there are many mountainous areas in which large amount of de-icing salt is used on bridges in winter, many concrete structures are exposed to risk of reinforcement corrosion. Therefore, it is very important to monitor accurate corrosion rate on the site.

By this reason, the authors have developed the monitoring method “CIPE” which determines corrosion rate using Tafel slope extrapolation method. In this paper, in order to confirm the accuracy of the method, by comparing the results of CIPE with the values calculated from the actual mass losses of steel bars corroded in concrete specimens. As a result, it was clear that the corrosion rates measured by CIPE agreed with the results of the mass losses. Furthermore, corrosion rates of steel bars were measured at a pier beam. The applicability of CIPE was confirmed on the site. From these examinations, it is clear that CIPE is very useful for monitoring the corrosion rate of steel in concrete on the site, as well as for predicting the life of concrete structure.
