After a number of corrosion experiments have been conducted in an H2S/CO2 environment basic characteristics of the developed corrosion products can be compared against the type of corrosion occurring to the mild steel test samples. A 2000-liter large scale flow loop with 10 cm I.D. and three different test sections has been used with the goal of understanding the mechanisms involved in H2S/CO2 corrosion environments. Mild steel from an X65 pipeline was used for flush-mounted weight loss samples exposed to consistent test conditions for up to 3 weeks. The corrosion product morphology and observed general or localized corrosion will be reviewed for testing conducted at 60°C with partial pressures of CO2 up to 8 bar partial pressure of H2S up to 10 mbar sodium chloride concentrations up to 10 wt.% and pH values in the range of 4 to 6.
