Direct Assessment (DA) is an accepted methodology to evaluate the impact of external internal and stress corrosion cracking on the mechanical integrity of underground pipelines. However when a pipeline has aboveground sections DA is not applicable and other methodologies are required to assess the integrity of the aboveground sections. For many years Det Norske Veritas (U.S.A.) Inc. (DNV) has been successfully applying a combined methodology on pipelines segments that include underground and aboveground sections; the combined approach includes the application of ECDA and API 570 piping inspection code. This combined methodology has been applied successfully since 2005 and the results are discussed in this publication. How to apply the methodology how to establish corrosion rates and calculate remaining life and reassessment interval is discussed. In addition to the application of this combined approach the results of the assessments are enhanced using finite element analysis (FEA) modeling to perform remaining stress calculations to address findings identified during the visual inspection of the aboveground piping.
