In order to ensure adequate protection of oil field facilities it is important to design appropriate laboratory test methodologies for different field conditions. In this paper, laboratory methodology regarding the recreation of field shear stress profiles that successfully mimic field conditions will be reviewed. Laboratory test conditions are chosen based upon field phase behavior and fluid mechanics. Testing is conducted to ensure that a given chemical will survive the different application challenges and compatibility requirements in a particular field environment. Baker Petrolite has successfully deployed corrosion inhibitors in diverse, challenging oilfield conditions such as situations involving carbon dioxide flood conditions, deepwater conditions, and conditions of high temperature and pressure. Our discussion will include these instances to illustrate why care in test methodology design generates products better suited for good field performance.
