Buried pipelines collocated with overhead power lines are subject to the influence of electromagnetic interference. Inductively coupled interference is present for both normal and faulted operation of the power system. In addition, conductively coupled interference occurs for the duration of the fault. This paper presents simplified formulas for determining peak induced voltage levels on the pipeline, thus indicating when mitigation is required. An application methodology for mitigation is developed, which provides direction as to the optimum design approach depending upon the predominant coupling mechanism.
